Through our exciting, creating and ambitious Design and Technology curriculum, we intend for all children to develop the confidence to take risks, through drafting and design concepts, modelling, and testing and to be reflective learners who evaluate their work and the work of others. We aim to encourage children to become resourceful, enterprising individuals who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements.

At Burscough Village Primary School, Design and Technology is taught as part of our foundation curriculum. The three main stages of Design Technology as outlined by the Nat Curriculum are Design, Make and Evaluate. The five aspects of Design Technology (Cooking and Nutrition, Mechanical Systems, Textiles, Structures and Electrical Systems) are underpinned by technical knowledge which are our core skills and must ‘stick’ in order to ensure progression. Cooking and Nutrition is separate with a focus on specific principles, skills and techniques in food, including where food comes from, diet and seasonality. From this, the National Curriculum organises Design and Technology attainment targets under 5 subheadings: Design, Make, Evaluate, Technical Knowledge and Cooking and nutrition.

Design and Technology is taught and assessed termly with two Design Technology weeks held in the Autumn and Summer terms. The five aspects of DT are taught across each phase: Key Stage One, Lower Key Stage Two and Upper Key Stage Two, with the exception of Cooking and Nutrition which is taught in each year group. Our Scheme Of Work is a spiral curriculum with key knowledge revisited with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to build on previous learning. Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies including independent tasks, paired and group work, practical tasks, computer-based tasks and inventive tasks.
