Bow the School Mentor Dog

The School Mentor Dog

We have a school dog called Bow. She comes to school with Miss Smith on some days. You will see her first thing in the morning and at the end of the school day at the school gate, in assemblies, around school working with individual pupils and hearing children read.

Children can benefit educationally and emotionally, increase their understanding of responsibility and develop empathy and nurturing skills through contact with a dog. In addition to these benefits, children take great enjoyment from interaction with a dog.

You will receive a letter when your child starts school asking for permission for your child to interact with the school dog. If you have any questions, please speak to the class teacher, trained Dog Mentor staff or Miss Smith.

Bow is back in school after being unwell and she will be joining classes for story time next week. It has been great to see the children coming up to stroke her as they arrive in the mornings. Bow had a great time today spending time with some of our pupils and putting some smiles on their faces.

The Reception class had a visit from Bow this morning. They are learning how to stay calm to help her stay calm in the classroom. They talked about what she likes to do, what she eats and how they can help her stay healthy.

Bow has enjoyed spending time with the Year 6 children in their brand new hoodies today. They went on a walk around the school ground and took turns walking her.

The Dog Mentor came into school today to start Bow's training to become the Burscough Village Primary School mentor dog. We are pleased to report that Bow passed her bronze assessment!

The staff learned all about how to use Bow to support the children in the school community. The children asked lots of questions and talked about their own dogs. They will be working on their dog handling skills with them at home and practising with Bow in school if they don't have a dog.
